Utility Trenching and Conduit Excavation in Calgary & Surrounding Areas
Precise trenching for water lines, power conduits, gas services, sewer mains, and telecommunication lines with 100% utility locates.
Commercial and Residential Utility Trenching
Digging near existing buried utilities requires patience, precision, and hand-exposure. Origin Earthworks performs safe utility trenching across Calgary and surrounding areas for electrical conduit, water feeds, natural gas, septic lines, and drainage piping.

Safe and Accurate Trench Excavation
Utility trenching is one of the most safety-sensitive excavation tasks on any construction site. Striking a buried gas line, high-voltage electrical cable, or pressurized water main can cause serious injury, service outages, and significant financial liability. Origin Earthworks approaches every utility trenching project with strict adherence to safety protocols and industry best practices.
Before any excavation begins, we submit locates through Alberta One-Call and wait for all utility companies to mark their buried lines. We review the locate markings on site, identify potential conflict points where the planned trench crosses existing utilities, and develop a plan for safe excavation in those zones. Where existing utilities cross our trench path, we hand-expose the line using careful digging techniques or coordinate hydro-vac excavation to safely expose the utility without risk of mechanical damage.
Our mini-excavators are equipped with narrow buckets that allow us to dig precise trenches through lawns, driveways, and landscaped areas with minimal surface disturbance. This is particularly important in established Calgary neighborhoods where preserving existing landscaping and hardscaping is a priority. We dig to the required depth below the frost line — typically a minimum of 1.2 meters in the Calgary area — to protect water and sewer lines from freezing during winter.
Once the utility line is laid by the appropriate trade, we place a sand bedding layer around the pipe or conduit for cushioning and protection. We install warning tape above the utility at a specified depth to alert future excavators, and then backfill the trench in compacted lifts to prevent surface settling. For trenches under driveways or load-bearing surfaces, we use higher compaction standards and may place granular material rather than native soil to ensure long-term stability.
We submit Alberta One-Call locates before every job and hand-expose buried cables or pipes whenever working near crossing utility paths. Our narrow mini-excavator buckets minimize lawn and driveway damage while achieving required depth below the frost line.
After lines are laid, we place sand beds, warning tape, and backfill with thorough compaction to prevent surface trench settling.

Trenching Below the Frost Line in Calgary's Expanding Neighborhoods
Calgary and the broader region experience deep frost penetration during winter, with frost depths commonly reaching 1.2 to 1.8 meters in exposed areas. This means utility trenches for water lines, sewer laterals, and other frost-sensitive services must be excavated to depths that place the utility safely below the frost line. In areas with heavy clay soils, trench walls can be unstable when wet, requiring proper shoring or sloping to protect workers in the trench.
Calgary's rapid growth has resulted in a mix of older neighborhoods with undocumented utility installations and new subdivisions with precisely mapped infrastructure. Our experience working across Calgary and the surrounding area means we are familiar with the utility layouts, municipal permit requirements, and soil conditions throughout the region. Whether trenching through the dense clay of established Calgary communities or the sandier soils of newer developments, we deliver safe, accurate utility trenches that meet code and protect existing infrastructure.
