Foundation excavation is one of the most critical steps in any construction project. Before any equipment touches the ground, we coordinate utility locates through Alberta One-Call and review the engineered foundation drawings with your builder or engineer. We verify footing depths, wall heights, benching requirements, and over-dig allowances. This planning phase ensures that when we start digging, every cut is exactly where it needs to be.

Our excavation operators use laser-guided equipment to dig foundation holes to within inches of the specified dimensions. We maintain clean, vertical walls where soil conditions allow, and properly bench or shore excavation walls in unstable clay to meet occupational health and safety requirements. We manage spoil piles on site when space permits, or arrange hauling to remove excavated material from tight urban lots.

For walkout basements, which are popular on sloped acreage lots in Calgary and the surrounding area, we carefully grade the excavation to create a level basement floor while allowing for the walkout door opening at grade level. This requires precise calculations of existing slope, footing step-downs, and drainage away from the exposed wall.

Once footings are poured and foundation walls are erected and waterproofed, we handle backfilling with controlled, compacted lifts. We never dump backfill in a single pass, as this can shift or crack freshly cured walls. Instead, we place material in layers and compact each lift to ensure the backfill provides stable support without exerting excessive lateral pressure on the walls.

We coordinate utility locates prior to digging, manage spoil piles cleanly on site or haul them off, and handle backfilling once footings and foundation walls have cured.
