Retaining-Wall Excavation and Base Preparation in Calgary & Surrounding Areas
Heavy trench excavation, benching, crushed stone base levelling, and drainage pipe placement for block, timber, and boulder retaining walls.
Retaining Wall Trenching and Base Preparation
A retaining wall is only as strong as the trench and base beneath it.Origin Earthworks cuts clean wall trenches into sloped yards, installs thick drain rock bases, places perforated clear-stone drainage pipes, and prepares solid subgrade so walls stay plumb for decades.

Engineered Base Cuts for Retaining Walls
A retaining wall is an engineered structure designed to hold back soil and resist the lateral pressure of the earth behind it. The most common reason retaining walls fail is not the wall material itself — it is inadequate excavation, poor base preparation, and lack of drainage behind the wall. Origin Earthworks provides the critical excavation and base preparation work that ensures retaining walls stand straight and strong for decades.
Our retaining wall excavation process begins with understanding the wall design, including the planned height, wall material, and the slope of the ground above and below the wall. We review the engineered drawings if available and calculate the required trench depth, base thickness, and cutback slope angles for the hillside behind the wall.
The first physical step is excavating the wall trench — a level cut into the ground where the wall base will sit. For walls on sloped ground, this trench must be stepped or benched to maintain a consistent base elevation along the entire wall length. We use laser levels to verify that the trench bottom is perfectly level, as any variation in base elevation will translate into a wavy, uneven wall.
Once the trench is excavated to solid subgrade, we place and compact a thick layer of crushed stone or drain rock as the wall base. This base layer serves multiple functions: it provides a stable, load-bearing platform for the wall blocks, it facilitates drainage beneath the wall, and it compensates for any minor irregularities in the subgrade. We compact the base to a high density using vibratory plate compactors.
Behind the wall, we excavate a drainage zone that will be filled with clear stone — angular drain rock that allows water to flow freely down to a perforated drain pipe at the base of the wall. This drainage system is critical. Without it, water pressure builds up behind the wall and exerts hydrostatic force that can push even the strongest wall over time. The drain pipe collects water and channels it away from the wall base through a designated outlet.
Failing walls almost always collapse due to poor drainage or an uncompacted base. We excavate behind the wall line for proper drain rock backfill zones, preventing hydrostatic water pressure from pushing walls over during winter freeze-thaw cycles.
We work alongside landscapers, masonry crews, and homeowners across Calgary to prepare ideal wall trenches.

Why Calgary's Sloped Lots and Freeze-Thaw Cycle Make Retaining Wall Drainage Critical
Calgary's topography includes many properties built on sloped terrain, particularly in communities along the Bow River valley, the Nose Hill area, and the rolling acreage developments in the surrounding area. These sloped properties frequently require retaining walls to create level yard space, support driveways, and prevent soil erosion. The clay-rich soils common throughout the Calgary region are particularly prone to holding water, which makes proper drainage behind retaining walls absolutely critical in this climate.
Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle is especially punishing on retaining walls. When water-saturated soil behind a wall freezes, it expands, exerting enormous lateral pressure that can push walls out of plumb or cause outright collapse. Our experience working in Calgary's clay soils and freeze-thaw climate means we understand how to design and excavate wall bases and drainage zones that accommodate these conditions. From residential garden walls in established Calgary neighborhoods to large terraced walls on acreage properties, we deliver base preparation that stands up to Alberta's most demanding conditions.
