Engineered Commercial Earthworks
Commercial site preparation is a fundamentally different undertaking from residential excavation. The scale is larger, the soil density and compaction requirements are stricter, and the project timelines are tighter. Origin Earthworks has the heavy equipment, experienced operators, and project management capabilities to handle commercial earthworks projects of any size across Calgary and surrounding areas.
Every commercial site preparation project begins with a geotechnical investigation and engineered grade plan. We work directly with geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and general contractors to understand the soil conditions, compaction requirements, and grade specifications for the project. This collaborative approach ensures that the building pad, parking lot sub-base, and utility trenches are all prepared to meet the exact specifications required by the project engineers.
Topsoil stripping is the first step on any commercial site. We strip the organic layer from the entire building footprint and parking lot area, stockpiling it for later use in landscaping or hauling it off-site. The exposed subgrade is then evaluated for bearing capacity, and any soft or unsuitable soil zones are over-excavated and replaced with engineered fill.
Mass earthmoving involves cutting high areas and filling low areas to achieve the designed site grades. We balance cut and fill volumes wherever possible to minimize the cost of importing or exporting fill material. When imported fill is required, we place it in controlled lifts of no more than six inches and compact each lift to the Proctor density specified by the geotechnical report. Every lift is tested for density compliance before the next layer is placed.
For parking lots and paved areas, we excavate and prepare the sub-base to the specified depth, place geotextile stabilization fabric where required, and spread and compact granular base material. We also handle deep utility trenching for water mains, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and electrical duct banks, coordinating with utility contractors to ensure trenches are properly bedded, backfilled, and compacted.
Commercial foundations and paved surfaces demand strict soil density and compaction metrics. We work directly with geotechnical engineers and general contractors to ensure every lift of imported or native fill meets specified Proctor density standards.
Equipped with heavy excavators, skid steers, packers, and laser-guided grading systems, we keep commercial schedules moving forward on time and on budget.

Meeting Calgary's Commercial Earthworks Demands in a Short Construction Season
Calgary's commercial and industrial development is concentrated in areas like the southeast industrial corridor, the northeast, and growing business parks in the surrounding area. These areas present a range of soil conditions, from the dense clay till common in the northeast to the sandier deposits found in parts of the southeast. Each soil type requires different approaches to stripping, compaction, and fill management, and our experience across the Calgary region means we can adapt our methods to the specific conditions of your site.
Calgary's short construction season places significant pressure on commercial project timelines. Earthworks must be completed early in the season to allow time for foundation construction, building erection, and site paving before winter arrives. Our team understands the urgency of commercial schedules and works efficiently to keep projects on track. We are familiar with City of Calgary development permit requirements, stormwater management regulations, and the erosion and sediment control standards that apply to commercial construction sites throughout the region.
