A driveway is only as good as the base beneath it. Gravel laid directly over topsoil, clay, or soft ground will sink, rut, and develop potholes within a single season. Origin Earthworks builds driveways that last by starting with proper driveway excavation and engineered base construction that addresses the underlying soil conditions on your property.

Our driveway construction process begins with excavating the driveway box — removing topsoil, soft clay, and organic material down to stable, load-bearing subgrade. The depth of this excavation depends on the soil conditions and the expected traffic load. For residential driveways, we typically excavate twelve to eighteen inches, while commercial or heavy-traffic driveways may require deeper excavation and thicker base layers.

Once the subgrade is exposed and compacted, we install heavy-duty woven geotextile fabric across the entire driveway area. This fabric serves a critical function: it separates the clean crushed gravel above from the native soil below, preventing gravel from sinking into soft clay and stopping clay from migrating upward into the gravel layer. Without this separation layer, gravel and clay mix together under load, creating a soft, muddy mess that no amount of additional gravel can fix.

On top of the geotextile, we place crushed aggregate in layers. We typically start with a coarse base layer of pit run or three-inch minus gravel for bulk and drainage, followed by a surface layer of three-quarter inch crushed gravel that compacts to a smooth, tight finish. Each layer is spread evenly with a skid steer or motor grader and compacted with a heavy vibratory roller to achieve maximum density.

The final step is crowning — shaping the driveway surface so it is slightly higher in the center and slopes gently toward the edges. This crown ensures that rainwater sheets off the driveway surface into side ditches or swales rather than pooling in the center and softening the base. We also cut drainage ditches or swales along the driveway edges where needed to carry water away from the driving surface.

In Calgary and the surrounding area, clay subgrades expand and soften during spring thaws. Our driveway construction process uses thick crushed stone sub-base layers combined with geotextile fabric to lock gravel in place and prevent it from sinking into underlying clay.

Calgary and the surrounding rural areas are characterized by heavy clay subsoils that become extremely soft and plastic during spring thaw. Driveways built directly on these soils without proper excavation and geotextile separation will rut and fail within one or two seasons. The freeze-thaw cycle in this region is particularly punishing — clay expands when frozen, then loses strength as it thaws, creating a soft, saturated base that cannot support vehicle loads.
