Culvert Installation and Replacement in Calgary & Surrounding Areas
Corrugated steel and HDPE culvert pipe installation, ditch excavation, rip-rap end protection, and driveway crossing builds across Calgary.
Driveway and Roadside Culvert Services
A crushed, rusted, or undersized driveway culvert causes ditch water to back up, wash out driveways, and flood road access. Origin Earthworks installs new corrugated steel and smooth-wall HDPE culverts, sets correct invert elevations, and builds stone headwalls to keep ditch water flowing freely.

Properly Sized and Bedded Culverts
A driveway culvert is a small but critical piece of infrastructure. When properly installed, it allows ditch water to flow beneath your driveway without backing up, washing out the crossing, or flooding your property. When a culvert fails — whether due to crushing, corrosion, or improper installation — the consequences can include driveway washouts, flooded yards, and even road access cut off entirely during high water events.
Origin Earthworks provides complete culvert installation and replacement services for residential driveways, acreage entrances, and commercial access roads. We handle every step of the process, from sizing and permitting to excavation, pipe placement, backfilling, and erosion protection.
The first step in any culvert project is determining the correct pipe size. Undersized culverts cannot handle peak flow volumes and will back up during heavy runoff. We assess the upstream drainage area, ditch flow rates, and local municipal requirements to select a pipe diameter that can handle the expected water volume. We typically install corrugated steel pipe for heavy-duty applications and smooth-wall HDPE pipe for residential driveway crossings, as HDPE is lighter, easier to handle, and resistant to corrosion.
Proper installation is critical to culvert performance. We excavate the ditch bed to the correct depth, place and compact a granular bedding layer, and set the pipe at the precise invert elevation to maintain a consistent slope that matches the ditch gradient. A culvert set too high will cause water to back up upstream, while one set too low will collect sediment and eventually block flow. We use laser levels to verify slope and elevation throughout the installation.
Backfilling is done in compacted lifts with crushed gravel to ensure the pipe is well supported and the driveway crossing can support vehicle loads without deforming the pipe. We install rip-rap stone headwalls at both ends of the culvert to prevent soil erosion at the pipe inlet and outlet, which is the most common point of failure for culvert installations.
We coordinate with the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities to ensure culverts meet diameter, length, and slope regulations.
We excavate the ditch bed, lay granular bedding, set the pipe with laser slope accuracy, backfill with compacted crushed gravel, and install rock rip-rap at pipe ends to stop soil erosion.

Preventing Driveway Washouts on Rural Acreages Around Calgary's Spring Runoff
Rural acreage developments throughout the Calgary area rely on ditch systems and driveway culverts to manage roadside drainage. The spring melt in the Calgary region can generate enormous water volumes in a short period, and culverts that are undersized, improperly installed, or damaged by frost heave can fail catastrophically during these peak flow events. Many older acreage driveways in the Calgary area have culverts that were installed decades ago and are now rusted, crushed, or partially collapsed.
Our experience working with the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities means we understand the local permit requirements, standard culvert specifications, and ditch drainage patterns throughout the region. We know which pipe materials perform best in Calgary's freeze-thaw climate, how deep to set culverts to prevent frost damage, and how to design headwalls that withstand the heavy spring runoff that is characteristic of the Calgary region.
